ഷ occurs but rarely in Mal. words, for origi— nal ഴ (ഊഴം, മുഷിയുക, സാക്ഷ); also for യ (കാരിഷം, മാനുഷം). Original ഷ is changed into ച (ഷഡംഗം, ചടങ്ങു), ഴ (അനിഴം), ട (വിഷഹാരി — പിടാരൻ); or assimilated (ശു കം, ചുക്കു; വിഷ്ണു, വിണ്ണു). ഷഡംഗം šaḍ/?/aṇġam S. (ഷഷ്). 1. സ is a foreign letter, generally replaced in Tdbh. by ത (സൂചി — രൂശി), or ച (സിംഹം — ചിങ്ങം), also by യ, if not dropped alto— gether (സീസം — ൦രംയം; സഹസ്രം — ആയി രം). It has however found its way into Mal. words (അലസൽ; the terminations കുടുസ്സു, തു റസ്സു; മൂസ്സതു) & Māpḷas esp. use it freely for ത (സാള, സൊരം, സാക്ഷ etc.). സ S. (one). 1. He, f. സാ. 2.
