3. അല്ല "IS NOT THAT, NOT THUS."
a. This Negative of ആക is a peculiar property of the peninsu–
lar languages. Its distinction from ഇല്ല may be seen in examples
like the following:
774. "അല്ല" എന്നതു ആക എന്നതിനെ നിഷേധിക്കു
ന്നു (314, 4. 645).
ഇല്ല അല്ല എന്നിവറ്റിന്നു തമ്മിലുള്ള വിശേഷം ആവിതു.
ഉ-ം ഇല്ലെന്നല്ലോരേടത്തു (ദ. നാ.) നല്ലതെന്നാകിലും അല്ല എന്നാകിലും ഇല്ലെ
യെന്നു വരായേതും (കേ. രാ. no action, whether good or not (good) will ever cease
to exist)അല്ലാതത് 568 "ഇല്ല" കാണ്ക.
Sometimes the difference is rather difficult to be seized.
എന്നാൽ ഈ ഭേദത്തെ പലപ്പോഴും പ്രയാസത്തോടേ പി
ടിച്ചു കൂടു.
ഉ-ം സാമ്യം ദ്വിജന്മാൎക്കു മറ്റൊന്നും ഇല്ലല്ലോ (ഭാര. അൎത്ഥാൽ അവൎക്കു
ഉപമിക്കതക്കതു മറ്റൊന്നും ഇല്ല there exists nothing comparable to
Brahmans അഥവാ മറ്റൊന്നും അവൎക്കു സമം അല്ല nothing else
is like to Br.) ബുദ്ധിപൂൎവ്വം ഞാൻ നിന്നെ കൊത്തുകയല്ല. (ഭാര. not willingly, it
was mere accident). ഞാൻ അടങ്ങീടുകയല്ല [രാമ. അൎത്ഥാൽ പിന്തുടരും I shall
not give up, (but pursue) my purpose] നിണക്കാരുമല്ല ദശരഥനൃപൻ തനിക്കു
താൻ ആകും ഭവാനുമല്ലെടോ (കേ. രാ. തൃതീയക്കുപിൻ opposed to the notion
that relations belong to us) തനിക്കല്ലാത്തതു തുടങ്ങരുതു; അല്ലാത്തേടത്തിൽ ചെല്ല
ല്ല (പഴ. what does not concern thee).
b. Thus അല്ല stands as connecting link between sentences,
expressed or implied ("not that, something else, not, but") and serves
for Conjunctions.
