| മെത്തൻ, ന്റെ. s. A class of Mahomedans.
മെത്തരം. adj. Pre-eminent, most valuable, most excel-
lent, first or best sort.
മെത്തൊന്നി, യുടെ. s. A poisonous plant, Leea Hirta.
(Rox.) see മെന്തൊന്നി. One root of this plant is sup-
posed to be poisoning and another an antidote.
മെദകം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. Vinous liquor for distilling.
മെദസ്സ, ന്റെ. s. 1. Marrow, applicable not merely
to the marrow of bones, but more properly to the serous
or adepose secretion that spreads amongst the muscular
fibres, and which is considered as performing the same
functions to the flesh, that the marrow of the bones per-
forms for them. 2. the pulp and juice of fruit.

മെധി, യുടെ.s. A post fixed in the centre of a thresh-
ing floor or barn, to which the cattle are attached as they
turn round it to tread out the corn. കളത്തിൽ നെല്ലു

to feed, to graze, cattle, &c.
മെയിപ്പിക്കുന്നു, ച്ചു, പ്പാൻ. v. c. To cause another to
feed animals or to tend cattle in grazing.
മെയുന്നു, ഞ്ഞു, വാൻ. o. n. To feed, to graze, to eat
food or grass, as animals, to browse as goats. v. a. To
cover a house with tiles, &c.
മെയ്ക്കൂലി, യുടെ. s. 1. Hire of a shepherd. 2. hire for
tiling a house.
മെയ്പുകാരൻ ,ന്റെ. s. A shepherd, a grazier.
മെരു, വിന്റെ. s. The fabulous mountain Meru, in the
centre of the seven continents, compared to the cup or
seed vessel of the lotus, the leaves of which are formed
by the different Dwipas. Its height is said by the Hin-
dus to be 84,000 Yojanas, sixteen thousand of which are
below the surface of the earth; the shape is variously de-
scribed as square, conical, columnar, spherical, or spiral,
and the four faces of it are of various colours, or white
towards the east, yellow to the south, black to the west,
and red towards the north; the river Ganges, it is said,
falls from heaven on its summit, and flows thence to
the surrounding worlds in four streams, the southern
branch is the Ganges of India, the nothern running in-
to Tartary is the Bhadrasómá, the eastern is the Sítá,
and the western the Chacshu or Oxus: on the summit
of Meru BRAHMA is said to reside, attended and wor-
shipped by the Rishis, Gandharbas, &c.; the regents of
the points of the compass occupy the corresponding
faces of the mountain, the whole of which consists of
gold, and gems; considered in any but a fabulous light,
mount Meru appears to mean the high land of Tartary,
immediately on the north of the Himalaya mountains.
