ന is related with ഞ (നാം from ഞാൻ) and യ (നുകം, യുഗം; ആകിന = ആകിയ). At the close of syllables it represents the Dravidian ൻ, which belongs not to the Dentals but to the 6th Vargam; hence it passes by the Tamil

laws of euphony into ൽ, as പൊൻ, പൊല്പൂ; whilst original ൽ changes before Nasals into ൻ (നൽ, നന്മ; ഗുല്മം, ഗുന്മം). Double ന്ന in Dravidian words is derived from Tamil ന്റ (as നന്നി, T. നൻറി; കന്നു, T. കൻറു, C. കറു)
