viii.) Nouns in apposition to express class, occupation,
rank etc.

Ex: Vishṇuguptan Cháṇakya 'bráhmaṇan' tanne (= Vishnu-
guptan is the brahmin Chánakya); Sugrívanr̥e agrajan 'vána-
rarájan' Báli (=Sugrivan's younger brother was the 'monkey
king' Báli).

ix.) (Chiefly in poetry) Sanskrit adjectives and parti-
ciples. *

Ex: ivan amalakula vibhava charitan Rŭtuvarṇṇan [= this is
Rutuvarṇṇan, a magnanimous (king) of unstained race].

These are the chief.

239. What single words are used as adjuncts of the predi-
cate when the predicate is a verb?

With verbs the adjuncts may be:

i.) The adverbial participles.

Ex: kiḷippeital 'vandichchu' chollináḷ [= the young parrot
reverently (lit. having shewn reverence) spoke]; 'bhakshi-
ppán' koṭuttitu (=he gave him to eat); vál chur̥r̥i víši [= he
waved his sword round (lit. having made it go round, he etc.)]

ii.) The subjunctive and concessive moods.

Ex: anweshichchál ar̥iyum (= if you enquire, you will know);
ní póyálum káryyatte sádhichchu pórá (= even though you
go, you will not be able to accomplish the object).

* In the poetical style, these adjuncts are sometimes made the
preceding member of a compound.
