179. What is a root?
The root is that collection of letters from which the
word is originally derived.
180. From how many sources have the words in Mala-
yálam been derived?
The sources from which the words from the Malayálam
language have been derived are two-fold. Some are
of purely Malayálam origin, others were originally
derived from the languages of other countries and are
called foreign derivatives
181. Give examples of words of purely Malayálam deri-
vativion.
Tala (=head); ní (=thou), tí (=fire); vá (= come!).
182. How many classes are there of foreign derivatives?
Foreign derivatives are of many classes.
i.) Those derived from the Sanskrit such as 'jalam' (=water),
'madyam' (=spirituous liquor), 'karnnam' (=ear), 'nayanam'
(=eye).
ii.) Those derived from the Arabic such as 'kattŭ' (=a note),
'chukkán' (=a rudder), 'vakkattu' (=edge?), 'sáypu' (=master,
lord), 'badal' (=exchange).
iii.) Those derived from Hindustáni words such as 'chéla'
(=a kind of cloth), 'bibi' (= mistress), 'huṇḍi' ('uṇḍika')
(= a bill of exchange).
