forth the best robe, put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet: 23 And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry; 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry. 25 Now his elder son was in the field: and as he came and drew nigh to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants, and asked what these things meant . 27 And he said unto him, Thy brother is come; and thy father hath killed the fatted calf, because he hath received him safe and sound.

28 And he was angry, and would not go in: therefore came his father out, and intreated him. 29 And he answering said to his father, Lo, these many years do I serve thee, neither trans- gressed I at any time thy commandment: and yet thou never never gavest me a kid, that I might make merry with my friends: 30 But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him fatted calf. 31 And he said unto him, Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. 32 It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

സേവിച്ചു ദ്രവ്യങ്ങളെ നാനാവിധമാക്കിയ ശേഷം വിശന്നു പന്നിയോളം താ
ണനേരം ഉണൎന്നു “തങ്കലേക്കു തന്നെ വന്നു”. ബുദ്ധിയില്ലാത്ത സൃഷ്ടികളു
ടെ ഭാഗ്യാവസ്ഥയെ വിചാരിച്ചു ഇതിന്നു പോലും അയോഗ്യൻ എന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടും
അതിന്നായി പ്രാൎത്ഥിപ്പാൻ തുടങ്ങി. പാപം ഏറ്റു പറയുമ്മുമ്പെ അഛ്ശൻ എതി
രെ ഓടി മുകൎന്നു പുത്രൻ എന്നു കൈക്കൊള്ളുന്നു. നല്ല വസ്ത്രം ദൈവത്തോ
ടുള്ള നിരപ്പിനേയും (യശ. ൬൧, ൧൦), മോതിരം പിതൃനാമത്തിൽ വല്ലതും ചെ
യ്വാനുള്ള അധികാരത്തേയും, ചെരിപ്പുകൾ വരവിന്നും പോക്കിന്നും തന്റേടം
ഉള്ളതിനേയും കുറിക്കുന്നു. സദ്യ നടക്കുമ്പോൾ ജ്യേഷ്ഠൻ വന്നു അസൂയ ഭാ
വിക്കുന്നു. താൻ ഏറ്റം സന്തോഷം ഇല്ലാതെ കൎമ്മങ്ങളാൽ സേവിച്ചു പോ
ന്നവൻ ആകയാൽ ഈ ഘോഷം എല്ലാം തനിക്കു പ്രതികൂലം, അനുജനെ
സഹോദരൻ എന്നു കൈക്കൊൾ്വാനും മനസ്സു ചെല്ലുന്നില്ല; മുടിയനെ ചേൎക്ക
യാൽ അഛ്ശനും അപന്യായക്കാരൻ എന്നു തോന്നുന്നു. ഇതു യഹൂദർ പൌ
ലിലും പുറജാതികളിലും, മുമ്പന്മാർ എല്ലാവരും പിമ്പരിലും കാട്ടുന്ന ൟൎഷ്യാ
ഭാവം. അൎദ്ധമാത്സൎയ്യം കലൎന്നു ശാസിക്കുന്ന ജ്യേഷ്ഠന്മാരോടും ദൈവം സാമ
വാക്കത്രെ പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടു കരുണ കാട്ടുന്നു താനും.

§ 34.

THE PHARISEE AND THE PUBLICAN.

പറീശനും ചുങ്കക്കാരനും പ്രാൎത്ഥിച്ചതു.

LUKE XVIII.

9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
