യ is initial in Dravidian pronouns (യാൻ, or ഞാൻ, യാവൻ); hardly in any verbal root. Some യ are derived from വ (ആയിരം fr. സഹസ്രം, C. സാ വിരം; അറിയിക്ക fr. അറിവിക്ക) by the in- fluence of palatal vowels. Final യ is fre- quently dropped (as തേങ്ങായ്, തേങ്ങാ, തേങ്ങ; വായി & വാ). യ S.
