PREFACE. Towards the Close of last year, I was called upon by Syndicate of the University of Travancore to Deliver a course of Five lectures on Champu-kavyas in Malayalam, mainly for the benefit of the students appearing in that subject for the B.A. Honours Degree Examinations of the University in 1941. Those lectures were, in due course, delivered and they are now included in this book. They have been here and there revised and expanded so as to meet the requirements of the wider circle of readers.
This is the First time that an attempt of this kind has been made in regard to Champu Literature in Malayalam. so Early as 1907, I delivered a lecture on this very subject, bringing several new facts to light, and that lecture has been included in my Vijnanadipika, Vol. I. Since then, I hav e been strenously endeavouring to collect further information of a valuable nature on Bhashachampus from diverse sources. in the result, I have been able, in the present work, to narrate the history of champu Literature in Malayalam, from the fourteenth centure down to the present time, in a fairly exhaustive manner. Some of the Champus dealt with in this volume are out of print and some others have appeared only in old magazines which are not easily available for reference, while yet ohters lie embedded in manuscript lkibraires with out seeing the light of
