34th. STORY.

A merchant in a certain city, had a garden at the back of his house,in which he cultivated all sorts of vegetables. One day an ass belonging to a washerman, finding the door open, entered and began to gaze. The merchant's wife, seeing the damage done to her favorite shrubs, became greatly enraged, and seizing a large stick, she struck the ass with such force, that she broke it's leg;this being reported to the owner, he come to the merchant's wife, who happened at that time to be pregnant, and after having abused her,he gave her such a kick in the stomach that caused a miscarriage. The merchant upon this preferred a complaint before the Magistrate against the washer-man,for having destroyed the son, whom he was anxiously expecting as a solace and support in his old age. The washer-man in his defense stated, that by means of the merchant's wife he had been deprived of the service of the ass; which carried the clothes he was daily in the habit of washing. The Magistrate having reflected for a short time, decided, that the merchant should carry the washer-man's clothes, until the leg of the ass should be cured; and that the washer-man should keep the merchant's wife until he could restore her to her husband in a pregnant state. നാനാവിധം many kinds. നടുതല a plant, vegetable, s.n. നടന്നു to plant, v.n പറമ്പ a garden, s.n. പടിപാതൽ the outer gate, s.n. തുറക്കുന്നു
