UNESCO, KING SEJONG LITERACY PRIZE FOR 1990

Having examined twenty-three nominations submitted by governments and five by non-governmental organizations and in compliance with the stipulations and criteria of the General Rules governing the Award of Prizes for Meritorious Work in Literacy. THE JURY has unanimously decided to award:

The King Sejong Literacy Prize to KERALA SASTRA SAHITHYA PARISHAD (KSSP) Trivandrum, (SCIENCE POPULARISATION MOVEMENT) INDIA for (1) having been actively involved since its inception in 1962 as a science popularization movement, in science communication, environmental and health education and in the application of science, technology and education to development; (2) conducting far reaching campaigns and using popular communication tools, such as theatre, puppetry and regular publications, brochures, etc. to inform the public and create positive attitudes and stimulate action; having made a signifacant impact on science movements in other States and prompted the organization of a campaign known as the 'All India People's Science March'. followed by the establishment of the 'All India People's Science Network',(3) launching in 1986 a broad five-year action programme to make the entire State fully literate and on the basis of the 1989 'lead kindly light' literacy campaign in the district of Ernakulam which made all the 3 million people of the district, literate leading the Prime Minister to declare Ernakulam as the first fully literate district of India in this International Literacy Year.
