106. What is the first future?

The first future is formed by adding the affix 'um' to
the root, or in the case of strong verbs to the streng-
thened root.

Ex: 'kéḷkkum' (= will hear), parakkum (= will fly), kúṭṭum
(= will join).*

In weak verbs both 'um' and 'kum' occur.

Ex: Not only 'keṭum' (= will spoil), 'chuṭum (= will get hot,
burn); but also such forms as chákum (=will die), 'ákum'
(= will become), perukum (= will become big, increase),
pazhakum (= will grow old or accustomed) etc. also occur.

107. What is the form of the second future?

The second future is formed with the affixes 'u', and 'ú'.

Ex: uḷḷu (=will be), okku (will agree); nallú (= will be good),
póru (= will fight), varú (= will come).

108. Can the second future be formed with a consonant
prefixed to the affix 'u'?

Yes, by affixing 'vu' to weak verbs, and 'ppu' to
strong verbs.

Ex: 1. ávu (= will become), koḷvu (= will take).

2. koṭuppu (= will give), veppu (= will cook).

After roots ending in nasals 'vu' becomes 'mu'.

Ex: káṇmu (= will see).

* Note by the translator. Some verbal roots are strengthened
by adding 'tt' to the root. This 'tt' assumes various forms accord-
ing to the consonant it follows: thus we have from kúṭu, kúṭṭu
from káyu, káchchu ; from akalu, akar̥r̥u.
