76. How are the affixes of the oblique cases added to
the crude-form?*

Some nouns (and in particular all plurals) add them
to the nominatives.

Ex: Ráman, Rámanál (= by Ráman); gurukkaḷ (= preceptors),
gurukkaḷute (= of preceptors).

Some however have a crude-form which is peculiar to
the oblique cases; this is called the substituted-form,
and it is to this that they affix their case-endings.

77. What is this substituted-form?

Nouns whose nominative singular ends in 'am' and
some other nouns add 'ttŭ' to the crude-form.

Ex: The substituted-form of 'maram' is 'mara+ttŭ = marattŭ'.

* The nominative (of which the vocative is only another form)
is the Casus Rectus (= upright case), all other cases are classed
together as oblique cases thus:

Nominative. . . . . . . . Ex: Ráman

Accusative. . . . . . . Ráman

Instrumental. . . . . by or with Ráman

Dative . . . . . to or for Ráman

Ablative. . . . from Ráman

Geniitive . . Ráman's, of Ráman

Locative. in Ráman
