57. What is an indeclinable?

An indeclinable is a part of speech which does not
admit of inflection.

Ex: é, ó, um.

58. What is the crude-form?

The radical letter remaining after taking away the
inflectional affixes from a word is the crude-form.

Ex: In ‘maranggal’, ‘por̥utu’; ‘mara’ and ‘por̥u’ are crude-forms.

59. What is an inflectional affix?

An inflectional affix consists of those letters which are
added on at the end of words to express various slight
variations in the meaning of those words. In the above
examples 'angaḷ' and 'tu' are affixes.

60. How many variations are there in nouns in conse-
quence of their gender?

Three, viz. for the masculine, feminine, and neuter
genders.

61. What is the masculine gender?

The masculine gender is that used to betoken the male
sex; it is frequently indicated by the affix 'an'.
