But in such words as these 'am' at the end of the word
is sometimes elided in accordance with the change usually
made in naturalizing Sanskrit words in Malayálam;
a consonant is sometimes elided at the beginning of a
Word also.

Ex: cheyya + véṇam = cheyyéṇam,

angngu+ ninnu = angngunnu,

cheyyáté + kaṇṭu = cheyyáṇṭu,

zhu + peṭṭu = kízhóṭṭu.

50. What is substitution in consonant sandhi?

When one letter is put in place of another it is called
substitution of consonants.

This substitution occurs chiefly in the case of nasal
consonants.

Ex: maṇ + chir̥a = maṇchir̥a,

álin + kízhu = álingzhu,

en + pór̥r̥i = enpór̥r̥i,

varum + tór̥um = varuntór̥um,

chákum + néram = chákunnéram,

perum + kóvil = perinkóvil.

Substitution in the case of other consonants is rare,
but does sometimes occur.

Ex: eṇ + diša = eṇḍiša,

piṇ + talam = piṇṭalam,

muṇ + kázhcha = mulkázhcha,

pil + páṭu = pinpáṭu,

nel + maṇi = nenmaṇi,

uḷ + móham = uṇmóham.
