Augmentation is when one of the consonants is inserted
between two vowels, the consonant thus inserted is
generally either 'ya' or 'va'.

Elision is when one of the letters of a word is dropped.

letter 'a'.

| pala+áṇḍum = palaváṇḍum,
a + iṭam = aviṭam, cheyta+ ár̥u = cheytavár̥u. |

'A' is elided.
Ex: illa + étum = illétum.
Examples such as the following are found in poetry:*
veṇṇakaṭṭa + uṇṇi = veṇṇakaṭṭuṇṇi.
44. When does 'ya' come in augmentation?
'Ya' comes in augmentation after palatal vowels.
Ex: vazhi + arike = vazhiyarike,
tí+itu = tíyitu,
tala+ óṭu = talayóṭu,
kei + iṭṭu = keiyiṭṭu.
* That is, the elision of 'a', the affix of the adnounal participle.
This example is however not to be imitated in prose.
