vannu (= destruction came at the time when he was eating);
in these, the sub-sentences 'anujan cholliya' (= which the
younger brother said), and 'avan bhakshikkum' (= when he
was eating) are connected with the sentences 'vákkatu kéṭṭu'
(=he heard the word) and 'póḷ nášam vannu' (= destruction
came at the time) by the connecting force residing in the
adverbial participial form. *

II. 1. The adverbial participles, 2. the infinitive, 3. the
subjunctive, 4. the concessive, and 5. the oblique cases of
the verbal and participial nouns have a similar connect-
ing force. Any of the examples given before, of sub-
sentences will form examples of this, but the following
ones may be given here.

Ex: 1. aṇiyalam keṭṭiyé (deivamávu) [= only after the orna-
ments are put on, will (the idol) become a god]. kízhóṭṭu póru-
ván (étum paṇiyilla)].

* 'Póḷ' (=time) is a noun in the 'ášrita prathama' (=dependent
nominative) used for the locative 'pózhil' (=at the time) and form-
ing an adjunct to the following verb. The sub-sentence prefixed
to 'póḷ' is always a sub-adjunct. So also the participial sub-sen-
tences prefixed to the dependent nominative 'néram' (= time), 'praká-
ram' (= manner), 'vaṇṇam' (= measure, mode), 'ár̥u' (=way), 'šé-
sham' (= afterwards) etc. are sub-adjuncts. These dependent no-
minative have 'at the' 'in the' etc. understood before them, as may
be required.
