SUBSIDIARY VERBS.

297. What are subsidiary verbs?

When the verb which in sense is the principal verb, is
put as a past adverbial participle, and is completed by
'viṭuka' (=to leave), 'vekkuka' (=to put, place), 'kaḷayuka'
(=to let go), póka (=to go) varika (=to come), kiṭakka
(=to lie), etc. and these last named conjointly with
their principal verb form but one single idea, they are
called subsidiary verbs.

Ex: kaḷańńúṭṭu (=kaḷańńu'viṭṭu') [= he lost it. lit. having
passed on, he left it]; iṭṭéchchu (=iṭṭu'vechchu') [= he put it
down, lit. (having placed it), he put it]; póy'kaḷańńu' (=he went
away, lit. having gone, he passed along); tírnnu'póyi' (=it was
finished up; lit. being finished, it went); váyichchu 'varunnu'
[=he goes on (lit. comes on) reading]; ezhuti'kkiṭannu' [=it was
(lit. lay) written].

298. What verbs are used to express adjuncts having
the sense of indefinite plurality?

The adnounal participles 'mikka' (=that is or are most),
'perutta' (=that is or are much or many), 'ér̥iya' (=that
became great) etc. are used to qualify nouns, and the infi-
nitives (joined with the particle 'e' or 'um') 'vaḷare' (=to
be increased), 'ér̥ave' (=to be great), 'tulòm=tulavum'
(=to be the whole), etc. qualify verbs in this sense.
