Ex: choinatu 'nimittam' kruddhichchu Dašásyan [=Rávaṇan
was enraged at (lit. by reason of) what was said]; Gangánadi
'varé' chennu (= he went as far as the Ganges).

3. In the senses of the locative, many nouns express-
ing place such as 'akam' (=interior, inside), 'kál'
(=foot), 'mėl' (= above), 'mun' (=fore, front), 'kei'
(=hand), 'uḷ' (=inside) etc. these all unite with either
the nominative or the substituted case to form a com-
pound noun.

Ex: nenchakam (=in his heart); kaṇṇinkál (kaṇṇinkal) (=in
the eye); kánmél (kálmél) (= on the foot); keiyuḷ (=in one's
hand).

269. What verbs are used as supplementary to the case
affixes (i. e. to supply the place of prepositions or
postpositions)?

1. In the senses of the instrumental, the adverbial parti-
ciple 'koṇṭu' (=having taken) is the principal one. It gov-
erns the accusative (of nouns expressing animate objects).

Ex: avané 'koṇṭu' cheyyichchu (= they, having taken him,
caused it to be done, i. e. they caused it to be done by him);
in this, 'koṇṭu' (=having taken) is completed by 'cheyyichchu'
(=caused to be done).

'Toṭṭu' (= having touched), 'cholli' (=having mentioned), 'kur̥i-
chchu' (=having indicated) are similarly used.

Ex: atir 'toṭṭu' pišaki (=they quarrelled touching the bounds);
náṭu 'cholli' piṇakkam (=the quarrel respecting the country);
ninne 'kur̥ichch' illašanka [=there is no suspicion concerning
(lit. indicating) thee].
