266. How is the locative used?

The locative is used in the following ten senses, viz:
to indicate 1. the support or recipient (i. e. that on
or in which any thing is or is placed); 2. contiguous place
(place at or near); 3. place towards or into which motion
takes place; 4. time; 5. the object towards which feel-
ing is directed; 6. the object of fear or anxiety; 7. com-
parison; 8. control or possession; 9. manner or quality;
10. apportionment.

Ex: 1. (Support or Recipient.) 'chumalil' ammayé eṭuttu (= he
took his mother on his shoulders).

'pizhayátavankal' pizhachumatti (= he laid the fault on him
who had not offended).

2. (Contiguous place.) ábharaṇanngaḷ 'már̥il' aṇańńu (=he put the
ornaments on her breast); 'katavinkal' nilkka (= stand at the
door).

3. (Motion to a place.) avar 'kóvilikkal' chennu (= they went to
the palace); 'maṇṇil' víṇu [= he fell amongst the dust (or mud)].

4. (Time.) 'ádiyinkalé' ozhivu (= leaving off in the beginning).

5. (Object towards which feeling is directed.) 'maṇṇil móham
(=lust for the dust, i. e. earthly-mindedness); 'dínaril' krŭpa
(= kindness to the sick).

6. (Object of fear or anxiety.) 'póril' bhayam (= fear of the
battle).

7. (Comparison.) 'munnétil' ér̥r̥am teḷińńár (= they are much
more pleased than before); 'atil' itu nallatu (= this is better
than that).
