264. How is the ablative used?
The ablative is used chiefly to express the following
three senses, viz: 1. the place from which motion takes
place; 2. distance; and 3. source or origin.
Ex: 1. (Motion from a place.) 'vazhiyil ninnu' ozhika (= move
from the way); ánamélninnu ir̥angngi (= he descended from
the back of the elephant).
2. (Distance.) 'marattilninnu arakkátam dúram (=half a lea-
gue from the tree).
3. (Source or origin.) 'náriyilninnu' janichchu (= he was
born of a woman).
265. How is the genitive used?
The genitive is a form used in composition; it does
not depend upon a verb but upon a noun; its principal
uses are the following, viz: to express 1. the source or
origin; 2. the controller or possessor; 3. the object of
reference.
Ex: 1. (Source or origin.) 'marattinr̥e' káya (=the fruit of
the tree); 'rájávinr̥e' putran (= the king's son).
2. (Controller.) 'Páṇḍavaruṭé' náṭu (=the country of the Pán-
dava princes).
3. (Object of Reference.) 'ur̥uppikayuṭé' vákku [= the mention
of (or what was mentioned about) the rupee].
