243. What are the four kinds of sub-sentences?
i) Those formed with verbal or participial nouns.
Ex: kalmasham ákunnatu dharmmatte 'mar̥akkayál' (=im-
purity (is) that which accrues by our forgetting duty).
ii.) Those formed with adverbial or adnounal participles.
Ex: šalyaruṭe šaram 'éláté' (ár̥uméyilla) [= (there were none)
'whom the arrows of the Salyas did not reach']; 'keṭṭiyiṭṭa'
náyikku kuppayellám chór̥u (=the food of the dog 'which is
tied up' is the sweepings).
iii.) Those formed with the subjunctive or concessive.
Ex: (polláta phalam varum) 'olláta' karmmam cheytál (= evil
fruit will come, if we do improper actions); oruttan 'koṭuttí-
ṭilum' (bhaktiyilláykil pizha varum) (='even if one gives'
offence will come if there be no faith).
iv.) And those formed with the infinitive.
Ex: 'enr̥e par̥r̥il púrṇṇa teḷivirikke' (avannu vidhi koṭuppán
páṭuḷḷatalla) (= there being the fullest evidence in my favour,
it was not proper to give judgment for him).
