236. What may adjuncts of the predicate be?
They may be either (1) single words or ( 2) several
words not forming a sentence or sub-sentence (see 242)
or (3) sub-sentences (phrases).
Ex: (1) 'teḷivil' páṭi (=she chanted clearly).
(2) 'támasam viná' par̥ańńákki (= he appointed him
away without delay).
(3.) 'ńanggal súkshikkáńńál' atu nástiyám (='if we do not
take care' it will waste away utterly).
237. What single words are used as adjuncts of the
predicate?
There are two kinds; those that are used with nouns
and those used with verbs.
238. What single words are used as adjuncts of the pre-
dicate, when the predicate is a noun?
With nouns, the adjuncts may be:
i.) Adnounal participles.
Ex: atu 'vallátta' móham (=that is an unbecoming desire).
ii.) The genitive.
Ex: itu 'enr̥e' janmam (= this is my property); ennuṭe guru-
kkanmár antaṇa pravaranmár (= the most excellent among
the brahmins are my spiritual preceptors).
iii.) The other oblique cases.
Ex: (Instr.) ivan 'dhanadanóṭu' sadrŭšan (= he is like
unto the god of wealth).
