218. Does the root in these cases ever receive any
augmentation?

Some roots are augmented by 'am' 'in' and other affixes
of composition.

Ex: ilan-tala (=ilam-tala) (= a young bud); karin-kal (=karin-
kal) (=the black rock, granite). *

219. Does duplication ever occur as a means of compo-
sition?

Duplication occurs not only in the cases mentioned in
answer No. 51, but also after words ending in a vowel
in 'y' and in 'n' 'l' and other liquids, provided that
the following member commences with a surd.

220. Should compound nouns be divided in parsing?

No. How many soever words a compound noun may
consist of, the whole should be parsed as one noun.

Thus: sáma-dán-ádi-šríman-níti-šástra-karttákkaḷ [(= the au-
thors of the auspicious branches of policy of which conciliation
and giving (are) the first] should not be separated, but parsed
as one compound noun.

221. What is to be remarked concerning the parsing of
the various words used to qualify nouns?

* 'Iṭum' and 'karim' may also be regarded as obsolete forms
of the future adnounal participle. (see qq. 216, 217.)
