DERIVATION OF NOUNS.
188. From what are most pure Malayálam nouns derived?
Most pure Malayálam nouns are derived from verbal
roots.
Thus: 'mín' (= 1. a star, 2. a fish) is derived from 'minnu' (=to
shine); 'kutira' (= a horse) is derived from 'kuti' (= to leap, to
spring forward).
Besides this many nouns formerly used as mere verbal
nouns have now lost that character, and have become
pure nouns.
Ex: aṭukkal (=nearness, lit. the approaching),
tuppal (=spittle, lit. the spitting),
arike (=arika + e) (= proximity, lit. the being near).
189. Were these old verbal nouns formed by any other
affixes than 'ka' 'kka' 'kal' and 'kkal'?
