are called defective verbs.

161. What tenses remain formed from the root 'uḷ' (=be)?

The root 'uḷ' has its present tense 'uṇṭu' and also its ad-
nounal past participle 'uḷḷa', it has no other forms. Cor-
responding forms from the compound verb 'uṇṭáku' are
used instead of those in which this verb is defective,
and the two words 'uṇṭŭ' and 'enkil' are used together
to supply the place of a subjunctive.
