III. ADVERBIAL PARTICIPLES.

136. What is the adverbial or verb-requiring parti-
ciple?

The adverbial participle is that form of infinitive verb
which requires to be followed by another verb in order
to give a complete sense.

Ex: atu póypóyi [=it is lost (lit. having gone, is gone)]; in this
the sccond 'póyi' (= is gone) is a past tense (finite), the first
'póy' (= having gone) is an adverbial participle.

kolluván varunnu; in this expression, as 'kolluván' (= about
to kill or to kill), requires 'varunnu' (= he comes) to com-
plete the sense, it is evident that it is a verb-requiring or ad-
verbial participle.

137. What is the form of the past adverbial participle?

The same as that of the past tense with the exception
that the final vowel is shortened as much as possible
in speaking and writing.

Ex: áykkoṇṭu (= having become and being taken); in this 'áy'
is the past adverbial participle.

vanneṭuttu (= having come, he took it); in this 'vannu' is
the past adverbial participle.

váyichchukúṭá (lit. having read, it will not join; i. e. it cannot
be read), 'váyichchúṭá; in these 'váyichchu' is the past adver-
bial participle. The past tenses (finite) 'áyi' and 'vannu' are
shortened into 'áy', and 'vannŭ' respectively.
