92. Actions, that persons are frequently doing, are represented by
affixing the present tense of the verb വരുന്നു, to come, to the past tense
of the verb expressive of the Action; as,
അവൻ അവിടെ നടന്നുവരുന്നു.
He is frequently walking there.
ഞാൻ എഴുതിവരുന്നു, or എഴുതിവരുന്നുണ്ട.
I am in the habit, or am frequently writing.
PAST TENSE.
93. Under this head will be described the formation and divisions of
the past tense.
FORMATION OF THE PAST TENSE.
94. The simple past tense is formed from the present; thus,
1st. Verbs whose present tense ends in ക്കുന്നു, preceded ഇ, or
എ, form the past by dropping ക്കുന്നു and adding ച്ചു; as,
| PRESENT. | PAST. |
| അടിക്കുന്നു, | അടിച്ചു, to strike. |
| ചിരിക്കുന്നു, | ചിരിച്ചു, to laugh. |
| വഞ്ചിക്കുന്നു, | വഞ്ചിച്ചു, to deceive. |
| അടെക്കുന്നു, | അടെച്ചു, to shut. |
| വിറെക്കുന്നു, | വിറെച്ചു, to tremble. |
| തറെക്കുന്നു, | തറെച്ചു, to nail. |
Exceptions.
| വിക്കുന്നു, | വിക്കി, to stammer. |
| ചിക്കുന്നു, | ചിക്കി, to dry grain. |
2nd. If ക്കുന്നു be preceded by ട, or റ, the past is formed by drop-
ping ക്കുന്നു and adding ന്നു; as,

| കിടക്കുന്നു, | കിടന്നു, to lie down. |
| നടക്കുന്നു, | നടന്നു, to walk. |
| കടക്കുന്നു, | കടന്നു, to pass over. |
| തുറക്കുന്നു, | തുറന്നു, to open. |
| പറക്കുന്നു, | പറന്നു, to fly. |
| മറക്കുന്നു, | മറന്നു, to forget. |
