20 A GRAMMAR OF THE
PERMUTATIONS OF CONSONANTS.
22. The consonants chiefly affected by combination with other letters
are the finals, which are changed into their initials when united to other
letters; as,
ആണും, | from | ആൺ | and | ഉം. |
തണുപ്പിപ്പാനായിട്ട, | ,, | തണുപ്പിപ്പാൻ | ,, | ആയിട്ട. |
പലരും, | ,, | പലർ | ,, | ഉം. |
സ്നെഹിച്ചാലും, | ,, | സ്നെഹിച്ചാൽ | ,, | ഉം. |
അവളും, | ,, | അവൾ | ,, | ഉം. |
അവനുമില്ല, | ,, | അവനും | ,, | ഇല്ല. |
23. In certain cases Sanscrit words, either whole or abbreviated, are
put in the place of their corresponding Malayalim terms; thus സ is of-
ten used for ന, as സൽഗുണം or സല്ഗുണം, for നല്ലഗുണം: സൽ
being the Sancrit, and നല്ല the Malayalim, word for good.
Sometimes the last letter of സൽ is dropped and ഉ subscribed to the
first letter as സു: in this state it is prefixed to words; as,
സുബുദ്ധി, | from | സൽ | and | ബുദ്ധി. |
സുവിശെഷം, | ,, | ,, | ,, | വിശെഷം. |
സുചരിത്രം, | ,, | ,, | ,, | ചരിത്രം. |
ദുർ bad, evil, is a Sanscrit word but commonly used for ചീത്ത, which
is the Malayalim for bad.
When ദുർ coalesces with nouns, the first consonant of the noun is
frequently doubled; as,
ദുൎമ്മൊഹം, | from | ദുർ | and | മൊഹം. |
ദുൎമ്മൎയ്യാദ, | ,, | ,, | ,, | മൎയ്യാദ. |
In some instances the word to be affixed remains unchanged; as,
ദുൎബുദ്ധി, from ദുർ and ബുദ്ധി.
The last letters of സൽ and ദുർ are often changed into letters corres-
ponding in sound to the first letter of the word to be annexed; as,
സജ്ജനം, | from | സൽ | and ജനം. | |
സന്മാൎഗ്ഗം, | ,, | ,, | ,, | മാർഗ്ഗം. |
സല്കുലം, | ,, | ,, | ,, | കുലം. |
