8 A GRAMMAR IF THE

ഇ, —ി, This mark, drawn over the consonant, thus കി is
called വള്ളി Walli; as വില്ല Bow; പട്ടി Dog.
—ീ This mark, named and used like the last, is made
by adding a circle to the top part of the foregoing
mark; thus ി, ീ; ചീട്ട Receipt, പീടിക Shop.
ഉ, —ു, Affixed thus to ക, and ര, only; as കു, രു.
—, —ു, Subscribed thus to ഗു, ഛു, ജു, തു, ഭു, ശു, & ഹു.
—, —ു, Joined to the letters ണ, ന, and their double
letters, as ണു, നു, etc.
—, —ു, Subscribed to all the rest; thus ഖു, ങു, യു, ഴു, etc.
—ൂ, Affixed to കൂ, and തൂ, only.
—, —ൂ, Subscribed thus to ഗൂ, ഛൂ, ജൂ, ഭൂ, രൂ, ശൂ,
and ഹൂ.
—, —ൂ, Joined to the letters ണ, ന, and their double
letters: as ണൂ, നൂ.
—, —ൂ, Subscribed to all the others, as ഖൂ, ടൂ, യൂ, etc.
ഋ, —ൃ, Subscribed thus കൃ, ചൃ, മൃ, etc.
ൠ, —ൄ, Subscribed thus കൄ, ചൄ, മൄ, etc.
ഌ, ഌ, Placed after the consonant, as കഌ, ശഌ, etc.
ൡ, —ൡ, Placed after the last, thus കൡ, ശൡ. etc.
Here, properly, ends this class of simple letters;
though, for the reason before assigned, the whole
16 characters have been ranged under the head
of അച്ചുകൾ, or vowels. The four following
characters are compounds formed from the pre-
ceeding letters; as,
എ, െ—, This substitute for എ, called Pulli, is prefixed
to consonants, and pronounced short or long, as usage has fixed the sound of the word of which it
makes a part; thus മെത്ത bed, ചെതം loss4.

4 In an ancient Malayalim Alphabet, now nearly obsolete, which ap-
pears to have been derived from an old Tamil Alphabet, of peculiar
character, and used for writing title deeds and grants of land, there are
two characters to distinguish the short and long എ; and it would tend
to make this language more definite, and be of great assistance to learn-
