5. Figurative language is used by all classes of the people. The Fi-
gures in most common use are,
1st. Personification. This figure is well known by the natives; as,
ആ ദിവാനിജി ചെല്ലുമ്പൊൾ കച്ചെരി ഒക്കെയും വിറെ
ക്കുന്നു.
When that Dewan goes, (to court) the whole Cutcherry trembles.
അവന്റെ സങ്കടം കാണുമ്പൊൾ വൃക്ഷങ്ങളും കൂടെ ക
രഞ്ഞപൊകും
The very trees will weep, when they see his grief.
എല്ലാ പൎവതങ്ങളും ഭൂമിയെ കറന്ന പാലിന്ന പകരം ര
ത്നങ്ങളെയും ഔഷധികളെയും എടുത്തു.
All the mountains milked the Earth and drew from it precious stones
and medicine, instead of milk.
ആദിത്യൻ തന്റെ വിരലുകളുടെ അറ്റം കൊണ്ട രാവണ
ന്റെ ഭാൎയ്യമാരെ മുത്തുമണികളെ അലങ്കരിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
The sun, with the tips of his fingers, decorates the wives of Ravenen
with pearls.
2nd. Simile or Comparison, Metaphor, and Allegory, are in constant
use, Native writings are full of fables; thus,
ആ ആന ഒരു മല പൊലെ ഇരിക്കുന്നു.
That Elephant is like a mountain.
ആയുസ്സ ചുട്ട പഴുത്ത ഇരിമ്പിന്മെൽ വീണ വെള്ളതു
ള്ളി പൊലെ ആകുന്നു.
Life is like a drop of water that falls upon red hot iron.
തിരുവിതാംകൊട്ട രാജാവ കൊച്ചീൽ രാജ്യത്തിന്ന ഒരു
കൊട്ട ആകുന്നു.
The king of Travancore is a fort to the Cochin country.
വിഷ്ണു സകല ലൊകങ്ങളുടെയും നാരായ വെരാകുന്നു
Vishnoo is the tap root of all worlds.
ജനന മരണമാകുന്ന കടലിന്റെ നടുവിൽ കിടന്ന വ
ലയുന്ന ജനങ്ങൾക്ക കര പറ്റുവാൻ നിന്റെ കരുണ
ഒരു പൊങ്ങ തടി ആകുന്നു.
Thy mercy is a floating timber, by which the people who lie tossing
in the midst of the sea of life and death, may reach the land.
