INFINITIVE MOOD.
220. With the following exceptions this mood is used as in English thus,
നന്മ ചെയ്വാൻ പഠിപ്പിൻ. Learn to do good.
അവൻ ഇവിടെ വന്നത അവളെ കാണ്മാൻ ആകുന്നു.
The purpose of his coming here is to see her.
അവൻ ൟ വീട തീൎപ്പാൻ തുടങ്ങി.
He began to finish this house.
അവൻ അവളാൽ സ്നെഹിക്കപ്പെടുവാൻ യൊഗ്യനല്ല.
He is not worthy to be loved by her.
The following forms are frequently used indifferently with the infinitive;
and may be rendered into English by the indefinite mood; thus,
അവൻ അത അറിയിക്കെണ്ടുന്നതിനായിട്ട ഇവിടെ
വന്നു; or, അവൻ അത അറിയിപ്പാനായിട്ട ഇവിടെ
വന്നു.
He came here that he might make that known.
അവൻ കുളിക്കെണ്ടുന്നതിനായിട്ട ആറ്റിൽ പൊയി.
He went to the river in order to, or, that he might bathe.
നിന്റെ നിലം തരിശായിട്ട കിടന്നാലും അതിന്റെ കരം
നീ കൊടുക്കെണ്ടി വരും.
Although your field is lying uncultivated you must pay tax for it.
ഞാൻ അവനെ രക്ഷിക്കെണ്ടുന്നതിനായിട്ട അവിടെ
പൊയി.
I went thither to save him.
The Dative case of any relative neuter pronoun is often used for the
infinitive. In some instances either form may be employed indifferently,
but this is by no means the case always. No rule however, without
numerous exceptions can be given on the subject. To know how to apply
each form correctly, requires an acquaintance with the language that
can only be acquired by the Students own industry.
അവൻ രാജാവിനെ കാണുന്നതിന്ന നാഗരകൊവില്ക്ക
പൊയി.
He went to Nagercoil to see the Rajah.
ഇവിടെ വരുന്നതിന ഇനിക്ക ശക്തി തന്നിട്ടുള്ള ദൈവം
എന്നെ രക്ഷിക്കും.
God who hath given me power to come here, will preserve me.
