203. കൊണ്ട . The use of this particle, in the formation of com-
pound words and with the verbs, has been fully described. When used
with nouns in the nominative, or accusative, it signifies cause or instru-
ment; as,
രാജാവിന്റെ കല്പന കൊണ്ട ഞാൻ അത ചെയ്തു.
I did it by the order of the king.
ഞാൻ ഒരു കൊടാലി കൊണ്ട ആ വൃക്ഷം വെട്ടികളഞ്ഞു.
I cut down that tree with an axe.
ഞാൻ പട്ടിയെ കൊണ്ട അവനെ കടിപ്പിച്ചു.
I caused the dog to bite him.
ഞാൻ അവനെ കൊണ്ട കച്ചവടം ചെയ്യിച്ചു.
I traded through him.
204. കൂടി, signifying through requires an ablative in ഇൽ; as,
ആ വഴിയിൽ കൂടി അവൻ പൊയി.
He went through that way.
അവൻ കിളിവാതിലിൽ കൂടി വീണ മരിക്കയും ചെയ്തു.
He fell through the window and died.
There is another form made by abbreviating the noun and particle and
coalescing the remaining letters; but this, it is to be observed, is a mere
northern provincialism: thus,
താൻ ൟ ആറ്റിലൂടെ നടന്നാൽ മുങ്ങി ചാകും.
If you walk through this river you will be drowned.
205. കൂടെ. This particle requires the ablative in ഒട; as,
അവൻ അവരൊട കൂടെ വന്നു.
He came with them.
അവർ അവിടെ ചെന്നപ്പൊൾ അവൻ അവനൊട
കൂടെ സംസാരിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു
When they went thither he was conversing with him.
കൂടെ, is sometimes used with a genitive in the above sense, but this is
incorrect, and chiefly confined to the Southern Districts; thus,
എന്റെ കൂടെ വാ. Come with me.
കൂടെ, is frequently used for also, even, and words of a similar import; as,
അവൻ എന്നെ തല്ലി ഞാനും കൂടെ തല്ലി.
He struck me, and I also struck.
