2nd. താനും. May in general be said to have a similar meaning
with എങ്കിലും used as above. It is invariably placed at the end of sen-
tences, on which it confers great force and elegance; and can only be
used in particular cases; which must be learned by practice:
വളരെ വിഷമം ഉണ്ടായി ഞാൻ കാൎയ്യം സാധിച്ചു താ
നും.
There was great difficulty, but I accomplished the business.
3rd. എങ്കിലും corresponds to although and though, when the thing
spoken of, is unconditionally certain; as, Though he was rich, yet he be-
came poor.
അവൻ എന്നൊട കല്പിച്ചു എങ്കിലും ഞാൻ അവിടെ
പൊയില്ല.
Although he commanded me, I did not go thither.
നീ അത ഒരിക്കൽ അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും നിന്നെ ഒരു
പ്രാവശ്യം കൂടെ ഒൎമ്മപ്പെടുത്തും.
Though you have known it once, I will again remind you.
എന്റെ വചനം വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നില്ല എങ്കിലും അവർ
പറയുന്നത വിശ്വസിപ്പിൻ.
Although you do not believe my word, believe what they say.
4th. This particle is sometimes rendered by the English words never-
theless, notwithstanding; as,
അവൻ ഉറങ്ങുന്നു എങ്കിലും നാം അവന്റെ അടുക്കൽ
പൊകെണം.
He is sleeping, nevertheless we must go to him.
ഞാൻ ഒരു ധനവാനാകുന്നു എങ്കിലും നിന്റെ ഭൃത്യൻ
ആകുന്നു.
Notwithstanding I am a rich man, I am your servant.
5th. എങ്കിലും is sometimes put for even; thus,
അവൻ അല്ലാതെ ആരും അവന്റെ സ്ത്രീ എങ്കിലും അത
അറിയുന്നില്ല.
No one, but he, not even his wife, knows it.
6th. When എങ്കിലും is repeated in affirmative sentences the mean-
ning is either, or. In negative sentences neither, nor; as,
ഞാൻ എങ്കിലും അവൻ എങ്കിലും വരും.
Either I, or he will come.
