159. പിന്നെ. This particle is used in various ways; as,
1st. It is placed at the head of sentences in the sense of afterwards
thereupon, moreover, &c.; аs,
പിന്നെ സന്ന്യാസി സുബ്രഹ്മണ്യന്റെ വചനങ്ങൾ
കെൾപ്പാനായിട്ട അവന്റെ അടുക്കൽ ചെൎന്ന വന്നു.
Afterwards the Sunyassee came near to Subramunyen, in order to
hear his words.
പിന്നെ അവൻ അവളെ ശാസിച്ചു.
Thereupon he rebuked her.
പിന്നെയും നീ വെഗത്തിൽ പൊകെണമെന്ന കല്പിച്ചു.
Moreover he ordered that you were to go quickly.
2nd. It sometimes corresponds to the following English words and
phrases; thus,
പിന്നെ ഉണ്ടൊ? Have you any besides these?
നീ വരുമൊ? പിന്നെയൊ.
Will you come? Of course I will, or, can you suppose I will not come.
ഞാൻ അത ചെയ്യുമൊ? പിന്നെഎന്ത?
Shall I do that? What else is there to do?
Sometimes പിന്നെ എന്ത? in the above connexion, means, Why
do you doubt, or, make a dispute about it.
ഞാൻ ഒരു സിംഹത്തെ തന്റെ ഭയപ്പെടുന്നില്ല, പിന്നെ
ഒരു പട്ടിയെ ഭയപ്പെടുമൊ?
I do not fear even a lion, Do you suppose then that I shall fear a dog?
3rd. This particle is sometimes merely expletive. It is also used to
excite attention to the subject in hand; as,
പിന്നെ ഞാൻ പറയുന്നത കെൾക്കണം.
Pay attention to what I am saying.
വൈദ്യൻ ഇപ്പൊൾ ഇവിടെ വരും, പിന്നെ എന്തിന്ന
ഞാൻ അങ്ങൊട്ട പൊകുന്നത.
The Doctor will be here just now, for what then am I going thither.
4th. This particle governs neuter pronouns in the ablative ending in
ഇൽ; as,
അവൻ പൊയതിൽ പിന്നെ അവൾ വന്നു.
She came after he went.
അതിൽ പിന്നെ അവൻ ഒടിപൊയി.
He ran away after that.
