Affirmative verbs, in most of the tenses, become negative by removing
ഉന്നു from the present indicative and adding ആതെ with the verb ഇ
രിക്കുന്നു in the tense required; thus,
| Present. | സഹായിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നു. |
| Past. | സഹായിക്കാതെ ഇരുന്നു. സഹായിക്കാഞ്ഞു. |
| Future. | സഹായിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കും. |
| Imperative. | സഹായിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കട്ടെ. സഹായിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്ക. സഹായിക്കാതെ ഇരിപ്പിൻ. സഹായിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കെണമെ. സഹായിക്കാതെ ഇരിക്കെണം. |

There is sometimes a slight difference of meaning between the negatives
formed with ഇല്ല and ആതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നു, when used in the indicative
and indefinite moods, which can only be distinguished by practice. But
whether negative verbs be formed by ഇല്ല or ആതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നു, the
infinitive26 and imperative moods must be formed by ആതെ ഇരിക്കുന്നു.
VERBS OF INTENSITY.
127. There are a few verbs, in common use, that are placed after
others for the purpose of adding beauty to an expression, and to strength-
en the sentences with which they are connected. Verbs of this description
follow past participles, or the past tense of the principal verb, and mark
the tense of the verb required; as,
1st. കൊള്ളുന്നു present, കൊണ്ടു past, കൊള്ളും future, to buy.
