There is another form of this verb made thus, വെണ്ടു. When this
is used correctly, an എ must be inserted in one of the preceding words
in the sentence; the meaning then is that the thing spoken of, is all
that is required; as,
ഇനിക്ക അഞ്ച പണമെ വെണ്ടു.
I only want five fanams: or five fanams are enough.
വെണ്ടി, or വെണ്ടു, has also a relative participle made thus,
വെണ്ടുന്ന, വെണ്ടിയിരിക്കുന്ന, വെണ്ടിവരുന്ന, &c.
The first of these forms is in most common use, and when the neuter
pronoun is affixed to it, the natives usually write it വെണ്ടുവത, or
വെണ്ട്വത; but these forms are low and incorrect; better thus,
അവൻ വെണ്ടുന്നത ചെയ്തു.
He did what was necessary.
3rd. ഒക്കും. This word implying equality, or agreement, comes from
the verb ഒക്കുന്നു, to be equal, or right. The past and future tenses only
are in use: the future is commonly used for the present; as,
| അവൻ നിന്നൊട ഒക്കും. | He is equal to you. |
| അതും ഇതും ഒക്കും. | That and this are equal. |
| അവൻ ചെയ്തതൊത്തു. | He did what was right. |
| അത ഒക്കും. | That will suit. |
4th. കഴിവു. A verb implying absolute necessity. It has no variation
and is seldom used alone. It follows a principal verb or participle in
which, or in some previous word in the sentence, an എ must be inserted;
വിവാഹത്തിന ഒരു മൊതിരം കൂടിയെ കഴിവു.
A ring is absolutely necessary to a marriage.
5th. ആവു. A verb implying power, or ability sufficient only for the
performance of the thing spoken of. It is sometimes used alone, but
most frequently coalesces with a principal verb. എ must be inserted in
one of the preceding words, as in the former instance: thus,
ഇനിക്ക ഇതെ ആവു.
I can only do this.
ഞാൻ നിനക്ക ഇതെ തരാവു.
I can only give you this.
