Véda, containing odes, or hymns which are usually chant-
ed, to which a fourth, the Atharva Véda, containing
mystical verses, or incantations, or magical formulas, is
usually added, and the Ithihása and Puránas or ancient
history and mythology are sometimes considered as a fifth.

വെദവിരുദ്ധസിദ്ധാന്തി, യുടെ. s. An heretic, an

വെദവിരൊധി, യുടെ. s. An heretic.

വെദവിഹിതം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. The sacred precepts, acts
or rites prescribed by the Védas.

വെദവ്യാസൻ, ന്റെ.s. A name or epithet of Vyása
the compiler and arranger of the Védas.

വെദസാരം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. The name of a book, the
essence of religion, theology.

വെദസിദ്ധാന്തം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. Theology.

വെദാംഗം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. A sacred science, considered
as subordinate to, and in some sense a part of the Védas;
six sciences come under this denomination; Sicsha, or
the science of pronunciation and articulation; Calpa, the
detail of religious or ritual ceremonies: Vyácarana or
grammar, phylology: Ch'handas, prosody: Jyotish or as-
tronomy, astrology, and Niructi or the explanation of the
difficult or obscure words and phrases that occur in the
Védas.

വെദാത്മകൻ, ന്റെ. s. God. ദൈവം.

വെദാദിവൎണ്ണൻ, ന്റെ. s. The mystical name of
God. ദൈവം.

വെദാന്തക്കാരൻ, ന്റെ. s. 1. One skilled or versed in
the Védánta system. 2. a follower of the Védánta philo-
sophy.

വെദാന്തം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. 1. Literally, the end, substance,
or essence of the Vedas, a refined system of philosophy
founded by Vyása in the Uttara Mimamsa, and com-
mented on by Madwáchárya, Sancaráchárya, and Rámá-
nujachárya in the Dwaita, Adwaita, and Visistka adwaita

systems. The three admit GOD, soul or spirit and matter.
The first, and last, admit a distinct existence of matter,
but not its eternity. The second denies the real existence
of matter and ultimately resolves all existence into that of
GOD alone. Simply stated, the Védánta is a system of pan-
theism. 2. the 32 books, appendices, called Upanishadas
attached to the Védas; and containing, upon the whole,
the same system.

വെദാന്തസംഗ്രഹം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. The title of one
of the Védántas.

വെദാന്തി, യുടെ. s. A. Védánti, a follower of the Védánta
philosophy.

വെദാന്തികൻ, ന്റെ. s. A Védánti, one skilled in the
Védántas.

വെദഭ്യാസം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. 1. The study of the scrip-
tures. 2. the repetition of the mystical syllable Om.

വെദി, യുടെ. s. 1. A raised square piece of ground
used for sacrifice, a kind of altar. വെലിക്കൽ. 2. a
quadrangular spot in the court-yard of a temple or palace,
usually furnished with a raised floor or seat and covered
with a roof supported by pillars. 3. a Pundit, a teacher.
പണ്ഡിതൻ. 4. a name of SARASWATI the wife of
BRAHMA. സരസ്വതി.

വെദിക, യുടെ. s. 1. A quadrangular open shed in the
middle of a court-yard, erected for various purposes. 2.
ground prepared for sacrificial ceremonies, a rude kind
of altar.

വെദിക്കുന്നു, ച്ചു, പ്പാൻ. v. a. To know, to learn, to
understand.

വെദിയൻ, ന്റെ. s. A Pundit, a learned Brahman,
a teacher. ബ്രാഹ്മണൻ.

വെദൊക്തം, &c. adj. Scriptural, taught or declared in
the Vedas.

വെദൊക്തി, യുടെ. s. Scripture. വെദവാക്യം.

വെദ്യം. adj. 1. To be known or ascertained. അറിയ
പ്പെടുവാനുള്ളാത. 2. to be explained or taught.

വെധനം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. 1. Perforation, piercing. തുളെ
ക്കുക. 2. depth, (in measurement.) താഴ്ച.

വെധസാധനം, ത്തിന്റെ. s. A perforating instru-
ment, an auger, an awl, &c.

വെധനി, യുടെ. s. 1. An instrument for piercing an
elephant's ear. 2. a small gimlet or perforating instru-
ment used to pierce gems, shells, &c. വിൎമ്മ.

വെധനിക, യുടെ. s. A small pointed perforating in-
strument, used especially to make holes in jewels, pearls,
shells, &c. an auger, an awl, a gimlet, &c.
