CHAPTER V.

Equilibrium and Motion of Gases.

175–185.

§ 81. Physical properties of the atmospheric air. 175.
Gravity and translocation of their parts are properties common
to liquids and gases and all the laws of liquids based upon these
properties are also applicable to gases. Gases have two pro
perties, which liquids have not: elasticity and extensiveness.

Wind, 176. 215; Resistance of air, 176. 177; Impenetrabi
lity of air, 178; elasticity of air. 179, 180.

Applications are: the windmill, 181; rotating fire-works,
182; the rocket, 183; the recoil of cannon and guns, 184. 185.
