XI

As to the direction it is either rectilinear or curvilinear. 109.

§ 31. Velocity means the proportion of the space, travers
ed by a body, to the time necessary for it. 109.

§ 32. An instrument by which the intensity of forces is
measured, we call a Dynamometer. The force developed by
a body is in general expressed in pounds.
The steel-yard (Dynamometer) is a very
simple apparatus; it has the form of a
"V". At the end of each arm an arc
is fixed, which passes freely through an
aperture of the opposite arm, one of these
arms is graduated. One of the arcs be
ing fixed to a resisting support, the other
arc, to which the weight or any force is to be attached, draws
near the arm, to which it is fixed, to an extent dependent on
the weight.

§ 33. The effects of moving bodies are proportional to the
products of their masses and their velocities. 110-111.

If the effect of a moving body (or the weight of a falling
body) is = F , mass = M and velocity = V, we see

1) F = M. V th. m.?
2) M = F/V th. m.?
3) V = F/M th. m.?

Example: 10 men tow a vessel weighing 1800 tons, and
5 men another one with a weight of 600 tons for the same time
and with the same strength; how many times is the velocity of
the second vessel greater than that of the first one?
