CHAPTER V.

As yet our investigations have been confined to the harmonization of the four Gospels, i. e.
to the task of interweaving the four inspired records of our Lord's life and ministry so as to
present One whole and continuous narrative. But since this life of Christ on earth is one which
passed within time and space, science cannot rest satisfied without doing its utmost to ascertain
the true and precise place in Universal History, which must be assigned to the History of Christ.
Nor can this aim be considered utterly unattainable, as long as the sacred writers themselves
supply us with dates referring to contemporaneous history. Though very scarce indeed, these
given dates, when followed out, will enable us to some extent to accomplish our object. Before
examining them, however, we subjoin a table showing the relation of the present Christian era
to the ancient Roman era (A. U. C. = Anno Urbis Conditae=the year from the building of the
city i.e. Rome, which event took place in 753 before Christ; hence A. U. C 1=753 B. C.

A. U. C. 750 = 4 B. C
,, 751 = 3 ,,
,, 752 = 2 ,,
,, 753 = 1 ,,
A. U. C. 754 = 1 A. D. 1)
,, 755 = 2 ,,
,, 762 = 9 ,,
1)=Anno Domini, The year of our Lord.
A. U. C 780 = 27 A. D.
,, 781 = 28 ,,
,, 782 = 29 ,,
,, 783 = 30 ,,
