§ 67.

THE FIRST DEMAND OF A SIGN. THE SIGN OF JONAS.

MATT. XII. 38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. 39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: 40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. 42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. 43. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none. 44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

LUKE XI. 29 And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil gene- ration: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet. 30 For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation. 31. The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall con- demn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. 33 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. 34 The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. 35 Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness. 36 If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

ള്ളിൽ മറഞ്ഞു നിന്ന ശേഷം (മത്ത.) മനുഷ്യപുത്രൻ ഈ ജാതിക്ക് അടയാള
മായി എഴുനീല്ക്കും എങ്കിലും നിനവയിൽ കണ്ടതു പോലെ അനുതാപഫല
ങ്ങൾ ഇങ്ങു കാണുമാറില്ല കഷ്ടം. ആകയാൽ ന്യായവിധിയിൽ ആ നഗരക്കാ
രും ശബാരാജ്ഞിയും (൧ രാജ. ൧൦, ൧) ഈ മൂഢ ജാതിക്കു കുറ്റം വിധിക്കും (മത്ത.).
അശുദ്ധാത്മാവ് മനുഷ്യനെ വിട്ട ശേഷം മരുഭൂമികളിൽ ഉഴന്നു ആശ്വാസം കാ
ണാഞ്ഞു മടങ്ങി വരുവാൻ തക്കം നോക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ സ്ഥലം അടിച്ചു തളി
ച്ചും അലങ്കരിച്ചും കാണുമ്പോൾ ഉടയവന്റെ പ്രമാദം നിമിത്തം ദുരാത്മാവു
തനിയെ അല്ല അധികം ദോഷസൂക്ഷ്മമുള്ള ൭ ആത്മാക്കളെ കൂട്ടി കൊ
ണ്ടു അകത്തു പ്രവേശിക്കുന്നു. ആയാളുടെ ആദിയേക്കാൾ അന്തം വല്ലാത്ത
താകും. ഇപ്രകാരം യഹൂദൎക്ക് മുമ്പിൽ ഉണ്ടായി; ബിംബാൎച്ചനാദോഷം ബാ
ബേല്യബാധയാലും ദേവകരുണയാലും മാറിയ ശേഷം കപടഭക്തി മുതലായ
