ച | ČA |
ച stands for ഛ (ചായം), ജ (ചലം), ഝ (ച ടിതി), ശ (ചാത്തം fr. ശ്രാ., ചാക്യാർ fr. ശ്ലാ.), ഷ (ചടങ്ങു), സ (ചേകവൻ), (നച്ചിയം); ക്ഷ (ചാരം,തച്ചൻ), even for ദ്യ (ചൂതു) and യ (ചോ നകൻ) & dialectically ര (രാ —in TP. ചാ —). Palatal vowels may change a dental into ച (തെള്ളു —, ചെള്ളു; പരിതു— പരിചു, as in gram- mar കടിച്ചു from കടിത്തു),, or lead to the dropp- ing of an initial ച(ചിറകു— ഇറകു; ചേട്ട— ഏട്ട). Old ച is also found lapsing into ശ (അ രചു— അരശു, പുതുച്ചേരി— ശ്ശേരി and സ (ഉ രുസുക, തുറസ്സ്). For etymological researches this is perhaps the most difficult letter. (In C. & Tu. ക represents frequently initial ച,, as ചെവി—കിവി; ചേരം— കേരളം. ച ča S. (G. te, L. que). And, also (ചേൽ, ചൈ ചകം čaγm (Tdbh.; ശവം) Corpse. ചകടു čaγaḍu̥ (Tdbh.; ശകടം)=ചാടു cart 1.
