The persistence of these and other religious-cultural ef-
fects testifies amply to what seem to be necessary features of
human life, the need for certainty, group solidarity, and a sense of
communal belonging. Sometimes of course these things are bene-
ficial. Still it is also true that what a secular attitude enables a sense
of history and of human production along with a healthy skepti-
cism about the various official idols venerated by culture and by
system is diminished, if not eliminated, by appeals to what cannot
be thought through and explained, except by consensus and
appeals to authority...

When you see influential critics publishing major books
with titles like The Genesis of Secrecy, The Great Code, Kabbalah
and Criticism, Violence and the Sacred, Deconstruction and
Theology, you know you are in the presence of a significant
trend...The cost of this shift, which began four decades ago in the
ahistorical manifestly religious aestheticism of the New Criti-
cism, is unpleasant to contemplate. Once an intellectual, the
modern critic has become a cleric in the worst sense of the word.
How their discourse can once again collectively become a truly
secular enterprise is, it seems to me, the most serious question
critics can be asking one another." 17
